Gen Z

Of late Gen z has become virulent in social, political and educational arena. Every generation is defined by the social, cultural, and technological environment in which it thrives. Gen Z is the newest generation entering the workforce, consisting of individuals born between 1997 and 2012. Their exact timeline is often debated because generations and their respective zeitgeists are difficult to delineate. Gen Z follows the Millennials and precedes Gen Alpha. They are frequently referred to as "digital natives" because they are the first generation to grow up with the internet and gain computer literacy at a very young age. They witnessed the Great Recession of 2007–2009 and were deeply shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic during the rise of the iPhone era. They have grown up in far more diverse settings than previous generations and primarily come from changing family set-up. They have lived their lives fully connected digitally. They transition between keypad phones to smartphones, having grown up during a time of ubiquitous access to streaming content and social media. To some extent they are pragmatic by nature, mature earlier than previous generations, and are more cautious regarding their career prospects. India is now being shaped by a generation that actively asks questions and shows rebellion nature. Having access to global information through electronic devices, they consume different content, build unique communities, and communicate differently.

Gen Alpha

This is the first generation to be named using a Greek letter instead of a Latin one. It describes the cohort of people born between 2010 and 2025. Most members of Gen Alpha have Millennial parents also known as generation Y. Because members of Gen Alpha are still children, their parents habitually use social media to share stories, photographs, and videos of them, meaning that much of Gen Alpha will have a digital footprint from birth. They are the first generation to experience remote classrooms, tablet computers, and ubiquitous streaming services from early childhood. They will also likely be affected by the emerging use of artificial intelligence AI , both through voice assistants like Google Gemini, Apple Siri and Amazon Alexa and natural language processing tools like ChatGPT.

The behavior, attitudes, and habits of Gen Alpha will likely be affected more by the COVID-19 pandemic than those of any other generation. Some researchers have referred to Gen Alpha as "Gen C" or "Gen COVID" because they will be the first generation to grow up entirely in a world reshaped by the pandemic.

Their role in current political affairs

Gen Z have showcased their significant political clout. Their anger becomes a beacon of Hope against unemployment, governance failures and corruption. They are mobilising through social media. Many countries like Sri lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh have witnessed ruling government changes and political reforms due Gen Z protests. There concerns are youth unemployment, paper leaks, and rising education costs. Persistent examination cancellations and recruitment delays accerlertes brain drain among youths.They demand equity in democratic participation. They have changed political mobilisation through technology. They are reshaping political agenda thrdigitally coordinated protests. The mental health has become a big concern for youth. They seek stable employment opportunities abroad that can cause huge financial and talent pool loss for india.

Unlike old political movements, these protests are decentralised, organic,youth-led and youth-driven.

There is a long way to go for converting India's demographic dividend into a sustainable youth dividend.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha are both thriving in a fundamentally tech-savvy environment. They interact with people beyond geographical limits. India is now aspirational, connected, and globally exposed. They break old norms and are exposed to multiple perspectives. Through technology their exposure has undoubtedly shaped their diversified worldview and characteristics, which results in a generation that values independence, often considered as irreverence towards elderly. This generational shift allows a diverse India to coexist despite differences in religion, caste, creed, ethnicity, food, customs, and language.
