Vande Bharat Mission

India plans to the massive evacuation process

Many times India's Prime Minister promised the Non-resident-indians (NRIs) that he will never let them down.He also expressed his deep sense of emotions for the indian workers working in the gulf countries because the are contributing to the motherland  “I will never let you down. Many more examples are there when the Indian authorities worked their best to bolster its emigrants. For instance when iraqu invaded on kuwait indian Air Force did commendable job to evacuate its people from a war-torn country.Of late,The coronavirus disease (Covid-19),sparked the global health emergency turned the tables. Many NRIs and other Indian citizens stranded abroad are now calling on PM to help them and make sure that their safety and security is the top priority for him.Indian nationals are still waiting for the government to fulfil his promises and bring them home safely.

The Story So Far

In the past events Indian government has got much support and got benefit from his international outreach to the diaspora. The Centre should realise that this is high time the indian diaspora should be welcomed with helping hand.India should take into account of its foreign lineage.Parties gains ground during the election from their supports.India gets lots of remittances from them in terms of dollars. They help to bolster the indian economy in many ways. Now because of unprecendented lowering prices of crude oil indian economy is facing shock waves in this crisis time.Repercussions of current scenario will be disastrous and disheartening.

What lies Ahead?

There are between 10-20 million Indian citizens abroad. In the Gulf countries alone,300,000 Indians have registered to return. An estimated 10,000 have contracted the virus which shows a grim picture of their travails. This poses an unprecedented challenge, one that no other country has faced so far. So,how can their safe passage home be ensured with minimal operational costs and maximum political benefit? The recent much accoladed Vande Bharat Mission is yet another attempt by PM to transform an external crisis into a domestic opportunity.
Government is taking pro-active and pre-emptive,A well coordinated step to tackle this impending crisis at large. The Vande Bharat Mission is likely to be the largest and most complex repatriation mission ever conducted by India. There will be 64 flights in the first week, for 15,000 people. This time  the government will only serve only as a facilitator.Officials this week emphasised that this is “not an evacuation plan, as it is not government-sponsored” and only “coordinated by MEA and missions worldwide on a commercial basis.” This is a subtle but important clarification that raises several questions.

Conclusive remarks

Those Emigrants flying in from North America, for instance, will be charged up to 1 lakh for a one-way flight, they have begun to voice their concerns. What will happen to those financially vulnerable, especially in the Gulf, who cannot afford to pay for their travel? Will they be abandoned, subject to the virus, chronic unemployment and Xenophobic backlash? And what about the optics of people paying to be taken home by the Indian Navy or the Indian Air Force? The pay-per-use policy is also driven by the need to reduce the financial burden on the government’s coffers.in particular Air India, which is still owed money for past operations.
