Safety net for corona-warriors

Of late, dastardly act of attacks on Healthcare professionals Healthcare professionals and rendering them utmost inhuman and insensitive situations shook the inner conscience of the country.Such types of incidents were providing a helping hand to the perpetrators with impunity, which was menacing and a bottleneck in the path of Corona-warriorsCorona-warriors duty.Healthcare workers  have right to be allowed to work in a healthy environment free of violence and abuse, without any fear of retribution.Since the very first case of Covid-19 infection in India was reported in end January in kerala, healthcare workers are being subjected to abuse and violence in the line of duty, which is paving the way for fear and depression in them. Most of the attacks have been on healthcare personnel sent to local areas to collect samples(nose and throat swabs)  from people who are suspected to have been infected or have come in contact with those who have tested positive  or those who are susceptible to be the contractor for the virus. Some incidents emerged as a genie out of the bottle when there was a steep surge in corona cases in the country. Some professionals Corona-warriors like  doctors returning home from duty have been heckled or stopped from entering their home premises,in some cases, they were forced to evacuate their rented premises.

The most heinous and brazen act of a few nuisance elements in Chennai who not only attacked healthcare workers but also prevented a decent burial of a neurosurgeon who died of COVID-19 complications on April 19,it is unbecoming that how insensitive and inhuman we are.It made the centre to take some concrete steps to deal with such types of inhuman incidents with immediate effect.Centre's exigent decision to promulgate an ordinance to redact the Epidemic Disease Act,1897 Epidemic Disease Act,1897to make acts of violence against medical personnel a cognisable and non-bailable offence and also provide reimbursement in  case of injury or damage or loss to property is a belated but welcome move taken by the union cabinet. Some unscrupulous people tried to give these incidents a communal tinge to find their lost-ground but the main reason behind these events was fear psychosis and ignorance instilled in the hearts of the people. After the Tablighi Jamaat incident communal hatred was on the rise in the country that led many in the community to avoid coming forward to get tested with fear of ostracism, isolation and stigmatisation, which resulted in attacks on healthcare workers who had gone to collect samples from those who were part of this congregation.PM's call to be united in this trying time was commendable and gained much accolades.Fake news incidents and misinformation add fuel to fire to these events. Some stakeholders were spewing venom to stoke communal flames, but they got nothing.Fundamentalist, stereotypical and social taboo are also the main cause of concerns in these unprecedented situations.

Healthcare personnel like Doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers who are forced to work long hours without sufficient break, treating patients infected with the highly contagious virus, and even when protective gears in the form of gloves, N95 face mask and personal protective equipment are scarce, need more empathy, compassion, unmitigated support and cooperation from the society.Design and theory is on symbolic gestures such as clapping hands and lighting candles in recognition of their selfless service during these trying times do not bolster their morale as much as understanding and support from populace do.Healthcare fraternity needs due respect and care for the betterment of our countrymen.Things will likely get worse if left unaddressed.
We must not lapse into inaction when the lock down is lifted and the silent killer of poor air quality resurfaces. In a country as diverse and stratified as ours.It cannot be ruled out that the healthcare fraternity is in a leading position and their security is in our favour,so every citizen should collaborate in this period and should stop exemplary damages wreaked by such events.
