Fake News

In recent times many fake news and unreliable stuffs are surfacing and gaining ground on various media platforms.Avalanche of misinformation shows cascading effect on our social fabrics and hinders further developmental aspects in our society.Covid-19 related fake news refers to the pandemic as 'Disinfodemic'.Government authorities have said that it has become tough task to deal with fake news in this coronavirus' era. Some unscrupulous, unauthorised and non- state actors are orchestrating false news campaigns, which pose a threat to fact-based journalistic objectivity, particularly during this current pandemic, people's lives and livelihoods.
Well before the outbreak of the virus, UNESCO was issuing warnings of the impact that political, technological, economic, and social transformation has had on how we exchange information in recent years and how we interpret every aspect of false news in multipronged manner.

There seems to be barely an area left untouched by the tentacles of disinformation in relation to the COVID-19 crisis, ranging from the inception of the coronavirus to its growing trajectory on the globe. In a time of high fears, uncertainties and unknowns, there is fertile ground for fabricated information to flourish and grow in a significant way.The imminent risk is that any single falsehood that gains traction can negate and nullify the significance of a body of true facts. When rumours are repeated and amplified, including by influential people, the grave danger is that information which is based on truth, ends up having only marginal and less impact in the public sphere. Not everyone is responsible for spreading untruths maliciously. The worrying and unfortunate thing is that Well-intentioned and naive people are also uncritically circulating dubious content unknowingly. Whatever the reasons but its implications and ramifications are dangerous without doubt.

There should be a robust and draconion mechanism to mitigate the repercussions of untruths by the government authorities, in order to counter rumours the authorities take measures for myth busters. It should be more transparent, and proactively disclose more data, in line with Right to Information laws and policies.Access to authentic information from official sources is very important for credibility in this trying time .However, this is not a substitute for information supplied by the news media, so we are also intensifying our efforts to persuade authorities to see free and professional journalism as an ally in the fight against disinformation, especially because the news media works openly in the public sphere, whereas much disinformation is under-the-radar, on social messaging apps and on digital platforms.People should also indulge in dissemination of facts and should behave responsibly.
