PLASMA THERAPY

It involves transfusing plasma retrieved from the blood of people who have recovered from COVID-19 patients into people suffering from the disease. As people fight the coronavirus they produce antibodies that attack the virus. These antibodies are secreted by immune cells known as B lymphocytes, found in plasma or liquid part of blood, which helps the blood clot when needed and supports immunity. One persons donation of plasma can help four people.Scientists say that a person needs only one transfusion to get enough antibodies to fight the virus.Once a person has recovered he or she develops antibodies that will stay in the blood waiting to fight the virus should it return. The idea of using one person's plasma to help another has been used during the outbreak of SARS,also caused by coronavirus.

This is not A new method, it is 120 year old therapy,  The convalescent plasma therapy was used even during the devastating 1918 flu, as well as to treat measles in 1930 on experimental basis. This experiment is to check the efficacy of the convalescent plasma therapy in the cases related to Coronavirus. This experiment has given positive results in the epicenter of outbreak in Wuhan(China). This therapy is considered to be a ray of  hope in dealing with the novel Coronavirus. Plasma therapy has been used to treat Ebola,SARS,MERS(Middle East respiratory syndrome),H1N1 and influenza. However it's use for Covid-19 is new.Worldwide some hospitals have tried it on some experimental basis with some success and with promising results. In India also the regulatory bodies like ICMR(Indian Council On Medical Research) and Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) are initiating clinical trials.A Covid-19 patient is considered a donor for plasma therapy, two weeks after being declared as 'Negative' for the infection because it is believed that by this time his or her antibodies are sufficient.
A specific method is used in transfusion of blood.Plasma and platelets are extracted only from the blood of recovered patient.Maximum 800 ml can be taken from the donor and for critical patients 200 ml is required hence 4 patient can be treated through one recovered patient.Bulk of research work is in the process across the globe, scientists and medical fraternity has been completely indulged in for the development of a efficient Vaccine with better results.Development of the vaccine is a rigorous and time consuming so in the absence of a vaccine plasma therapy can be efficient and low cost treatment that could be helpful for the poor countries,So it needs lot of research work.
