Aftermath of the Outbreak

With the rapid surge in covid-19 cases to 2,779 on Friday, the next upcoming  seven days are going to be very crucial and will also decide the extent of the outbreak and will spot virus' hotbed in the country otherwise containment will become holy-grail for us.We are in a race against time to trace, spot, identify ,test and treat the contagious clusters, carry out stringent contact tracing, and implement tight quarantine measures in a phased manner because it's an overarching exercise. It is good to see that the government authorities have zeroed-in on the root cause of the outbreak, pump-priming the healthcare infrastructure and nearly concentrating all the resources to tackle the pandemic. However, as a consequence, some patients requiring non-Covid-19 treatment are being locked out. With most OPDs and operation theatres shut, many with critical illnesses such as cancer, HIV and renal failure are being denied treatment or are unable to access life saving medicines, dialysis, anaesthesia ,surgery so government should no at loggerheads over Non-covid 19 patients.ITrue, one has to be careful about Covid-19 infections at hospitals. But a cancer patient can’t postpone treatment for fear of getting the coronavirus. Similarly, HIV patients not being able to access their medicine will see their immune systems being compromised, leading to co-morbidity. Denial of treatment to non-Covid-19 cases could see a sharp rise in non-coronavirus deaths. Also alarming are reports that several states have curtailed outreach services for immunisation and ante-natal check-ups. A large number of children have already missed their immunisation for March and this jeopardises their overall health – particularly if they are newborn. Similarly, depriving expecting mothers of ante-natal care could see an increase in maternal mortality. Therefore, slowing down other health services as resources are diverted to Covid-19 will lead to serious non-coronavirus public health complications down the road. India’s healthcare coverage is still below par and patients often have to travel hundreds ofkilometres to get treatment. One understands postponing elective surgery or routine check-ups in the midst of the pandemic. But authorities must ensure that services for emergency cases or the critically ill are not interrupted.
