SPITTING

Of late, excruciating incidents of spitting on currencies, health officials, civic officials by unscrupulous and uncivilized boors or even patients,is surfacing on the news platforms and social media.People should be aware of and help the government hand in hand but some people are engaged in making damages to the country and its populace. These practices should be prohibited with immediate effects and with brute force. In view of the increasing danger of the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has also appealed to people to refrain from consuming smokeless tobacco products and spitting in public places. The Union Health Ministry has asked all states to prohibit the use and spitting of smokeless tobacco in public places to prevent the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
“Chewing smokeless tobacco products, paan masala and areca nut (supari) increases the production of saliva followed by a very strong urge to spit. Spitting in public places could enhance the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” the ministry said in a letter to chief secretaries of all states and union territories.

In making spitting in public spaces punishable with fines, the government has gone on the offensive against a repugnant habit that refuses to change despite decades of grappling with tuberculosis as a public health challenge.Though spitting bans by many municipal bodies have been in effect for years, enforcement remains shoddy and lukewarm because of subaltern lumpenism .Now Centre has invoked Disaster Management Act provisions to empower district magistrates to act against violators with immediate effect.Additionally, bans have also been imposed on sale of chewable tobacco. The danger of Covid-19 spread through respiratory droplets and exhaled aerosolised particles has been well-documented and spitting is one of the common transmission avenues besides respiration, sneezing and coughing. Sneezing and coughing are involuntary to a large extent but wearing a mask can mitigate risks and can be a lifesaving norm. But spitting is a conscious act reinforced by habit, which years of awareness campaigns by public agencies have cautioned against to no avail but this time round it can be vital and play a significant role to deal with this public health crisis.Even a mask may not deter a compulsive spitter but it's high time people should changed their attitude towards sanitation practices across the board. The West defeated spitting, first with society’s upper crust abandoning the habit and the rest joining in imitation. But in India both rich and poor, especially tobacco and paan consumers, continue to believe in its expurgatory benefits for the self, communicable diseases be damned, but along with that public awareness campaigns can be a beacon in this battle.
“In this background, it is requested that necessary preventive measures may be taken under the appropriate law to prohibit the use and spitting of chewing smokeless tobacco products in public,”
It’s taken a highly virulent infectious or contagious disease for most people to realise how personal hygiene and public health are conjoined.Policing spitting is messy business for the overstretched and densely populated states. But public shaming may work wonders and can do miracles. If open defecation could be tackled with the Swachh Bharat campaign and polio vaccination could be absorbed by populace, public spitting should be easy game for the Indian state.Gutka sales bans alone don’t help if production continues unhindered. Now,imagine a multi-drug resistant TB strain going virulent like Covid-19.A fifth of the world’s 10 million new TB cases in 2018 were Indians.Let’s not spit,or get caught spitting.Or the spittle will come back to hit us.Government authorities have released the advisory,In this time of crisis people should adhere to the norms and comply with the rules and regulations proposed by the government with full force,It can be panacea.
